The Cave
In the depths of his subterranean lair, a hunter stalks his prey. Will you be able to escape him in time?
The Cave was a project done by myself and a few other aspiring game devs as a way to learn the PICO 8 program. I mean, they made Celeste on this thing, how hard could it be, right?
As it turns out, harder than we thought. But after alot of learning Lua and getting our workflows down, we turned out something pretty fun and that we had alot of fun making.
Our goal as a team was to create an "8-Bit Horror Game," and this brought it's own challenges. How do we make something genuinely scary with the super-low resolution nature of pixel art? With limited code & coding knowledge, how do we program an AI that's fun to be chased by?
The answer was to have a lone predator chase you around his lair, where he knows all the tricks. We really liked the idea that instead of many threats assailing the player, we could put all of our time into creating systems around one, unnerving monster that we infuse with alot of character. Using a very simple rule for the enemy AI, we were able to create a system of escape tunnels the player can use to get away from the monster and a system of "false wall" tokens which can be broken down by the monster to get to the player, creating an illusion of security which can be shattered.
Overall, our team had a lot of fun learning the program and creating this little game. You can play it on the right side of my profile. Let me know what you think!
Red String
Red String is a romance platformer about grandparents, chinese myths, and unstoppable love currently in production by the team at Powered With Love.
It's currently still in development, but I've posted the beta here at the right to keep myself honest about working on it with my team.
